Ambassador Lyu Jian Talked about Current Situation in Hong Kong
2019/08/21

On August 20, Ambassador Lyu Jian attended the Forum on the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China and on the ”Belt and Road Initiative” sponsored by the Thailand Young Entrepreneurs’ Association. In his keynote speech, he introduced the current situation in Hong Kong to representatives of the economic, business and media sectors of Thailand, as well as overseas Chinese in Thailand.

Ambassador Lyu said that demonstrations and violent offences in Hong Kong have lasted for more than two months, causing damage to the local rule of law, social order, economy, people’s lives, prosperity, stability and the international image of Hong Kong. The most urgent and overriding task of Hong Kong is to stop violence and restore order in accordance with the law. The Central Government firmly supports Chief Executive Carrie Lam in leading the HKSAR government to exercise law-based governance, supports the Hong Kong police’s solemn enforcement of the law, and supports law-based punishment on violent offenders.

Ambassador Lyu stressed that Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong and Hong Kong affairs are China's domestic affairs. External forces are openly meddling in Hong Kong's affairs in an attempt to disrupt Hong Kong, undermine "one country, two systems", and take the opportunity to counter, disturb and restrain China. The Chinese government strongly condemns and resolutely opposes this, and is making every effort to safeguard national sovereignty and security as well as Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. Any attempt to cross the bottom line of "one country, two systems", undermine China’s national sovereignty and security, challenge the power of the Central Government and the authority of the Basic Law, and use Hong Kong for infiltration or sabotage against the Chinese mainland is absolutely impermissible.

Ambassador Lyu said that recently, voices in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the international community calling for an end to riots and restoration of the rule of law and order in Hong Kong have grown louder and louder. Many overseas Chinese communities are also actively speaking out in various ways. We are determined to and capable of safeguarding Hong Kong's security and stability. Any attempt to contain China's development, undermine Hong Kong's prosperity, stability and "one country, two systems" is doomed to fail.

Ambassador Lyu stressed that the Central Government of China pays great attention to Hong Kong's long-term stability and sustainable development. Our efforts to develop the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will never be held back by the temporary chaos in Hong Kong. The purpose of building Shenzhen into a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics is to better implement the strategy of the Greater Bay Area, and enrich the practice of developing "one country, two systems". Leaders of China and Thailand have reached important consensus on synergizing the Greater Bay Area with Thailand's "Eastern Economic Corridor". The construction of the Greater Bay Area is increasingly becoming a new opportunity and highlight for cooperation between Thailand and Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Hong Kong in particular. Looking forward to the future, Hong Kong will definitely overcome the difficulties, and the "Oriental Pearl" will shine even brighter.
