Mae Fah Luang University is an autonomous public university set up in 1998 to commemorate Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra of Thailand. It has a very high social reputation and has established cooperative relations with many elite universities in the world. The university attaches great importance to cooperation with China and is one of the earliest universities in Thailand to establish a Confucius Institute. Chinese is a compulsory course provided by the Confucius Institute located within the university. With the support of the university, the Confucius Institute has functioned as a bridge in promoting friendly relations between the two countries.

As per the cooperation agreement signed by the Ministries of Education of both China and Thailand, Mae Fah Luang Unviersity set up the Sirindhorn Chinese Language and Culture Center in 2005. The center is funded by the Chinese side with a building area of 1,100 square meters. The exquisite architecture and landscape in the style of Suzhou garden add lively Chinese elements to the university which is reputed as "the university in a park". Under the care of Princess Sirindhorn, Chinese language teaching and sinology research at the center have yielded fruitful results. At the same time, the center also conducted a number of exchanges in various fields to promote friendly communication in languages, cultures and peoples between Thailand and China.

  2. From February 14 to 15, at the invitation of Dr. Sumet Tantivejkul, Secretry- General of the Chaipattana Foundation of Thailand, Chinese Ambassador Lyu Jian and spouse accompanied Princess Sirindhorn to Amphoe Mae Fa Luang and Mae Sai of Chiang Rai Province. During the visit, the Princess gleefully used the oil extracted from camellia seeds to cook Thai food and invited Ambassador Lyu and his wife to have a try.

Thailand's Camellia Project started in 2004 with the coordination and promotion of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, and the camellia seeds were introduced from Guangxi, Yunnan, Hunan and other places in China. It is a key project of Highland Development Projects in northern Thailand. Under the care and commitment of Princess Sirindhorn, the project has made continuous progress in recent years and the output of camellia and oil-bearing crops has been increasing year by year.
